The Senior Accountant serves as the lead role of the Accounting function and is responsible for recording and overseeing all financial accounts and transactions to MIP accounting system. This position also provides system design support to ensure the Accounting function is accurate, effective, and efficient.
Non profit grant accounting, government contract experience is required for this position. On site in Oakland, after 90 day introductory period, 2 days per week can be hybrid.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Has full responsibility for auditing and overseeing appropriate checks and balances for all transactions for the department. Audits procedures to assure that all journal entries are accurate and correct.
- Performs ongoing review and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, and indirect expense allocations, ensuring transactions are complete and accurate.
- Reconciles earned and contributed revenue and receivables to ledgers monthly.
- Acts as lead monitor for the monthly close of expenses and supports timely and accurate month-end and year-end closing of all expenses and the general ledger including complex close related activities. Escalates to Finance Director when there is a challenge related to timely closure.
- Record and track accounts in accordance with funder directives and audit requirements.
- Supports payroll processing and ongoing entries related to payroll expenses, benefits, and employee-related check issuance.
- Prepares all assigned audit-related schedules, analyses and reconciliations for review by Finance Director and CEO. Ensures readiness for BACS’ year-end audit and fully supports the process.
- Assist in the coordination of training for all levels of staff on MIP accounting system and department policies.
- Participates in tasks related to external financial audits, including preparation of supporting documentation for annual financial audit and assisting managers in implementing audit procedures.
- Participates in accounting-related project implementations (i.e., online check requests, paperless reimbursement processes)
- Assures a robust and accurate inventory management system and reporting procedures; including the review and maintenance of the Agency’s Accounting Policy manual
- Provide backup coverage support and coordination to A/P, A/R and Payroll functions, as needed.
- Assist Finance Director and CEO with monthly financial reports and budget reports, as requested.
- Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Associate Degree in Accounting plus five (5) years of general accounting experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of the General Acceptable Accounting Practices (GAAP).
- Must have knowledge of general ledger entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and computer applications
- MIP experience is a plus
- Strong GL skill preferred

- Highly competitive compensation $48/hr ($99,840 annually)
